Last night at the 72nd Emmy Awards the media mogul powerhouse himself Tyler Perry delivered an insightful speech reflecting on diversity and culture as he accepted the 2020 Governors award!
The Governors award is highlighted as being one of the top Television Academy awards within the industry which is only given to an individual, project or entity in celebration and recognition for their accumulated work.
Within Sunday night’s virtual showcase Perry made history of his own becoming the first Black person to ever individually receive the honor, reports People. .
Perry took the stage to recall a quilt gifted to him by his grandmother and shared that because of his lack of understanding he didn’t appreciate the history nor symbolism behind the sacred piece. He intertwined his parents struggles growing up while pinpointing his mother’s hopes for him as man to be able to create a life where he didn’t allow himself to be boxed in.
Perry recognized his mother’s wishes while embarking on the difference in people’s life he’s made solely upon finding and creating his own way within an industry that didn’t always accept him.
