Noir Nation, Jack Harlow is opening up about the inspiration behind his newly released album Monica!

During a recent appearance on Popcast by The New York Times, the rapper shared that he leaned deeper into R&B and the roots of Black music while crafting the project. In his words, the process made him feel like he “got Blacker” creatively.

🎶 Leaning Into the Roots

Jack explained that instead of pivoting toward more “mainstream” or traditionally white sounds, a route he says some of his white peers take he intentionally moved closer to the foundation of hip-hop and R&B.

For him, it wasn’t about trends; it was about authenticity and influence.

“I love Black music. I love the sound of Black music,” he shared, emphasizing that his artistic direction is deeply tied to the culture that shaped the genre.

⚖️ Culture, Credit & Conversation

The rapper also acknowledged the current cultural climate, noting he’s “hyper-aware of the politics of today” and the “safer landing spot” some artists choose.

Jack says this shift felt intentional — but social media ain’t feeling his comments one bit.

Stay VANILLA baby! 😭😭😭

Not trying to be funny but whoever approved, “I don’t like no whips and chains but you can whip your lovin on me” should not be anywhere near the Monica album

Y’all know why he called it “Monica” right ??- ” My N*gga”

What are your thoughts, is this a genuine nod to the culture that raised hip-hop… or a statement that misses the mark?
