Noir Nation, it looks like we’ve been saying it wrong this whole time! 🫣 Hollywood icon Denzel Washington recently revealed the correct way to pronounce his name, and it’s got everybody running it back in their heads.
Not “Den-ZEL,” But… 👀
In a now viral interview clip from Jimmy Kimmel Live, the two-time Oscar winner broke it down once and for all. When Kimmel pointed out that there are now four players in the NFL named Denzel—compared to none before Washington won his first Oscar in 1987—he laughed and set the record straight.
“I know. There’s a lot of Denzels now. And this is how you know they named themselves after me, because my name is not pronounced Den-ZELL,” Washington clarified. Instead, the correct way is DEN-zel, with the emphasis on the first syllable.
A True Legend Stays Humble 🌟
Even though fans and Hollywood alike have been getting it wrong for years, Denzel brushed it off with his signature charm. For him, the work has always spoken louder than any mispronunciation. With a legacy spanning from Malcolm X to Training Day and countless classics in between, the man is proof that greatness doesn’t need to be spelled—or said—perfectly.
Family Origins of the Name 👨👦
Denzel also shared the story behind the pronunciation. As a junior, he explained that his mother altered it to avoid confusion with his father, Denzel Hayes Washington Sr. “My mother would say ‘Denzel,’ and we’d both show up. So she said, ‘From now on, you’re Den-ZELL,’” he recalled. It’s a small but meaningful tweak that’s stuck with him ever since.
Fans React 😂👏🏾
Social media, of course, had a field day with the revelation. Some fans joked that they’d been calling him the wrong name their “whole lives,” while others said they refuse to switch it up after so many years. Still, the news sparked a wave of appreciation for the actor’s humility and patience.
Noir Nation, are y’all changing the way you say it—or is it always gonna be Den-ZEL in your book?
