According to officials in Costa Rica, Warner’s 8-year-old daughter was never in the water during the incident that claimed his life. Initial reports had many of us thinking he lost his life while trying to save her — but investigators now confirm that’s not the case.
Warner had been playing with his daughter along the shore at Playa Grande beach when he and a friend decided to enter the ocean. It was then that both men got caught in a powerful current. While the friend made it out safely, Warner was swept under. Despite being pulled from the water and receiving CPR for nearly an hour, he sadly didn’t survive.
The local Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) emphasized that the little girl remained safely onshore and never entered the water. This detail clears up widespread confusion — and reminds us how quickly false narratives can spiral in moments of grief.
The beach where the accident happened is known for strong riptides and reportedly had no lifeguards on duty due to underfunding and limited resources. Witnesses say that nearby surfers, a beach doctor, and bystanders rushed to help, doing everything they could to save Warner.
His death, confirmed as caused by asphyxia due to submersion, has devastated fans across generations. For many of us, Warner was more than “Theo” from The Cosby Show — he was a thoughtful artist, a private family man, and a voice for the culture. His podcast Not All Hood, co-hosted with Candace Kelley, showed his continued passion for telling Black stories with nuance and care.
“He wanted to be known as someone who was a sincerely good person,” Kelley shared. “He did everything with intention.”
