Former Minneapolis officers Tou Thao and J. Alexander Kueng charged for their part within the inhumane murder of George Floyd , have recently rejected a plea deal that would have only landed them 3 years of prison time!
According to the Associated Press, the two men had a set time frame issued by Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill to either accept or reject the proposed plea deal prior to going to trial. On Monday August. 15th both Tou and J. Alexander formalized their rejection for the state’s offer.
Though much wasn’t said by either of the two men’s legal team as to why they rejected the plea deal. Thou came forward in saying, “It would be lying for me to accept any plea offer.”
As we previously reported both Thao and Kueng have been charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder as well as second-degree manslaughter in George’s death. Back in February, Thao, Kueng, and another officer identified as Thomas Lane, were convicted in federal court of violating George’s civil rights.
Lane was sentenced to 2.5 years, Thao to 3.5 years, and Kueng was issued a 3-year sentence.
Assistant Attorney General Matt Frank has come forward on Monday within a recent hearing to say that the state’s sentencing guidelines recommend sentences of 12.5 years on the murder count and 4 years on the manslaughter count. By the former officers rejecting the plea agreements, they are now faced with the risk of being convicted and serving full state sentences.
