A Georgia family is currently searching for answers after their loved one who had been suffering from a mental health crisis, died while in police custody with officials stating she “fell out” of a patrol car!

According to NBC News Brianna Grier, 28 had suffered from a coma and was taken off a ventilator after a doctor confirmed her as being brain dead following the incident.

Brianna’s father Marvin Grier has come forward in stating that entire ordeal occurred on July 14th after his wife called for assistance because their daughter who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia was suffering from a mental health crisis.

He says Brianna suffered from the mental health disorder over a decade ago and while she’s on medication she also uses illegal drugs to cope. Malcolm says usually when these kind of instances occur ambulance workers would be dispatched to their home and she would be provided attention within a medical facility. However this time two deputy officers arrived at their home in response to their call.

Marvin says that he told the deputies, “ She needs help.”

Brianna also told the deputies she’d been drinking. They responded in saying that they would detain her for intoxication until the morning and that they would provide her medical attention. Marvin says that prior to the deputies pulling off he watched them place his daughter inside the back of their patrol car, handcuffed and pulled off.

Unfortunatley they never made it to the jail as an officer came to the family’s home the following morning around 6AM, on July 15th and stated that Brianna had, “kicked the door open and jumped out the car.” She is said to have suffered a fracture to her head and was taken by airlift to Grady Memorial.

Marvin states that authorities haven’t provided further insight to the incident and that they haven’t heard from any officers since Brianna’s passing.

The tragic incident is said to currently be under police investigation. In a forwarded statement, the bureau says an early investigation into the death shows that deputies arrested Brianna as they were taking her to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office and that she “fell out of a patrol car and sustained significant injuries.”

Geoffrey Alpert, a professor of criminal justice at the University of South Carolina and an expert on police training, said in a text message that patrol cars are “ALWAYS supposed to be locked from the inside.” “Otherwise,” he added, “prisoners would be letting themselves out all the time.” Alpert said he thinks child locks are used to secure police vehicle doors. He’d never before heard of someone escaping from a cruiser, he said.

“Her sisters, her brothers, her babies — we need answers,” Marvin Grier said. “Want to know the truth.” Brianna leaves behind a set of three year old twins.
