In efforts of offering healthier and nutritious meal plan options to students, New York City Mayor Eric Adams is set to introduce ‘Vegan Fridays’ to public school cafeterias!
Mayor Adams made introduced the new meal plan on ‘Good Day New York’ this morning. “I love healthy food, and I love life, and our children should not continually be fed food that’s causing their healthcare crises: childhood obesity, childhood diabetes, asthma.”
He explains that he believes the menu change will improve students health. “There’s a real correlation to what we serve in the Department of Education every day, and what is being served in our hospitals, our jails. We should not be feeding the crises.”
According to News 1 NY, students have been very hands on with the new menu as they’ve been taste testing the vegan meal plans.
“Our children are weighing in — they’re doing food testing, they’re determining the type of food they want that’s healthy,” he said. “And you know what? They asked for this. They are tired of the food they are being fed in their schools, and they want healthy options.”
Mayor Adams also recently suggested that he plans to stop serving chocolate milk in public schools because it’s high in sugar.
“The DOE is committed to the health and wellbeing of every child, and having a consistent, nourishing and filling meal each day is essential in ensuring students can succeed both inside and outside the classroom,” said DOE associate press secretary Jenna Lyle said in a forwarded statement. “Following on the success of Meatless Monday and Fridays, we are excited to be expanding access to healthy and nutritious food options for NYC students with the phasing in of a vegan focused menu on Fridays.”
