History Made: Dr. Maya Angelou Becomes 1st Black Woman To Appear On U.S Quarter!

Cousins!

The legendary Dr Maya Angelou has officially been honored posthumously as she makes history as the first Black woman to be featured on a U.S quarter!

As we previously reported back in May of 2021, Dr. Angelou was featured apart of an initiative to honor history making American women within the American Women’s Quarters Program.

The coin features an image of Dr. Angelou with her arms raised upward, a bird in flight and a rising sun behind her. The image is said to be symbolism of the way she lived her life.

“Each time we redesign our currency, we have the chance to say something about our country – what we value, and how we’ve progressed as a society. I’m very proud that these coins celebrate the contributions of some of America’s most remarkable women, including Maya Angelou,” says U.S Treasure Secretary Janet Yellen.
