Throughout his career T-Pain has received more than his fair share of criticism surrounding his use of auto-tune.
Despite him breaking into the music industry with a new sound that fans quickly adapted to, T-Pain was called out by numerous musical giants even by people he considered a friend.
T-Pain revealed within an upcoming Netflix series “This Is Pop” created by Entertainment Weekly that he suffered from depression after Usher directly criticized his use of Auto-Tune.
“Usher was my friend,” T-Pain said within a now viral clip. “I really respect Usher. And he was like, ‘Man. I’m gonna tell you something, man. You kinda f**** up music.’ “
The Tallahassee native said that he chuckled within a nervous manner thinking Usher was joking at first but soon learned that he wasn’t.
“I didn’t understand. I thought he was joking at first, but then he was like, ‘Yeah man you really f**** up music for real singers.’ “
T-Pain explained that the conversation took a deep toll on him later down the line. “I’m like, ‘But I used it, I didn’t tell everybody else to start using it. I don’t even think I realized this for a long time, but that’s the very moment that started a four-year depression for me.”
The eight part docuseries ‘This is Pop ‘ is set to cover behind the scenes of numerous big artists within the music industry including T-Pain, Boys II Men, Chuck D and more scheduled to air June 22nd on Netflix.
