A Nigerian man is facing prison time after authorities say he spent more than $1 million USD that was mistakenly credited to his bank account — and never reported it.
Ojo Eghosa Kingsley was sentenced in January 2026 after an Edo State High Court ruled that his First Bank account had been wrongly credited with approximately ₦1.5 billion — over $1 million USD — between June and November 2025. Instead of alerting the bank, prosecutors say Kingsley began withdrawing and transferring the funds for personal use.
Investigators with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) revealed that the money was moved through multiple accounts, including some belonging to his family members. While officials were able to recover most of the funds, roughly ₦272 million — about $193,000 USD — was never returned.
Rather than repay the remaining balance, Kingsley reportedly chose to serve a one-year prison sentence, a decision that has since set social media on fire. Many online are now debating whether the punishment fits the crime — while others are questioning how a bank error of that size could even happen in the first place.
